The Kosmos Incident
by
Jacques C Roy
In January 1978, the Russian satellite Kosmos 954 crashed in the Northwest Territories, scattering radioactive debris across the tundra. But what if, in their efforts to retrieve the debris, the Canadian and American militaries discover the presence of a spaceship from the future? Could it have caused the crash of Kosmos? The Kosmos Incident reimagines this real historical moment as the starting point for an incredible story of space and time travel. In the twenty-fifth century, Earth has received a message from an unknown alien sender. Captained by Jacques Lévesque, a crew of twelve are tasked with travelling to the Kalmar Archipelago to find the source of the message. The voyage goes wrong from the start, sending the Kalmar ship on a voyage stretching further across time and space than anyone anticipated. After spending fifteen years on an uncharted and paradise-like planet, the crew, now with children, decide to return to Earth. But when they get there, they find themselves in the year 1978, deeply and unknowingly implicated in the Kosmos crash and Cold War military intrigue. Their ship is badly damaged and marooned in the arctic, perhaps forever. What do they do and how will they take care of their families amid the chaos and the suspicion that they might be predatory off-world aliens? What’s more, because of the dynamics of time travel, they discover that they’re in a time loop which further complicates matters. Their survival and the wellbeing of their children are their first priorities; but how can they achieve this without violating the sanctity of the timeline? Where and who can they turn to for help? How can they ever hope of getting back to their own century? This novel will appeal to afficionados of Canadian Cold War history and lovers of science fiction—especially anyone who’s ever longed to know more about the lived experiences and personal relationships of the people in a science-fiction story.
