My Restless Thoughts
A Novel
by
Beverley Dowling
Robert and Peter Crenshaw, who are the sons of an abusive father and an overwhelmed mother, grow up in the same circumstances, but follow opposite paths. Robert attempts to escape his past through academic excellence while Peter descends into a vortex of substance abuse. Robert becomes a respected doctor, hiding both his past and his brother. His deep shame prevents healthy relationships, but he cannot hide from his past forever. Rosa, Robert's loyal maid, understands both brothers, and helps each to find a new way forward.
In Beverley Dowling’s deft telling, love triumphs over the dark legacy of family trauma and intergenerational violence. My Restless Thoughts is full of hard truths and poignant moments. - Ron Thompson, author of The Wind From All Directions and A Person of Letters (winner of Honourable Mention for "A Book Deserving of Special Recognition" for The Wind From All Directions, in the 2024 Keith Matthews Award)
Beverley Dowling grew up in a small town in southern Ontario, similar to the one described in My Restless Thoughts. She has travelled on every continent except South America and Antarctica, and understands that small communities in all societies have their own social expectations. She is a lawyer, who has seen the flaws and virtues of the legal system. She has chosen scenes which she has witnessed personally to describe the court system. She has two adult children and one grandchild. She relaxes with friends, music, gardens and pets. My Restless Thoughts is her second novel.
