Forward Looking
Aging for All Ages
by
Karen A. Halley
What if the hardest decisions about aging could be made before they became emergencies? Aging is something every one of us will experience, yet many of the conversations and decisions surrounding it are postponed until circumstances leave little time to prepare. Forward Looking: Aging for All Ages offers a practical framework for thinking ahead about the changes that may come with aging and the decisions that can affect individuals, families, and loved ones. Rather than waiting until a crisis forces you to react, this guide encourages you to start asking important questions now: • How will you or a loved one be cared for when additional help is needed? • What should be considered if living independently is no longer possible? • Who should have the authority to make important decisions when someone can no longer make them independently? • What conversations should families have about care, housing, finances, and end of life wishes? • What documents and plans should be considered before they are urgently needed? From housing and caregiving to powers of attorney and wills, Forward Looking explores practical situations that families may eventually face and offers starting points for researching and preparing for them. This is not an exhaustive manual on aging, nor does it attempt to provide one solution for every family. Instead, it gives you a framework for thinking ahead, asking better questions, involving the right people, and finding solutions that fit your circumstances. The goal is simple: prepare before you have to. Whether you are thinking about your own future, helping an aging parent, supporting a loved one, or simply beginning to consider what later life may bring, Forward Looking invites you to make aging an active part of your planning rather than something you deal with only when a crisis arrives.
