Andreas and the Salamander
by
Kalliope Koliotassis
Andreas is a curious boy who loves all types of animals, so when he goes for a walk with his family one day and comes across a salamander he wants to befriend it. He tries to catch it, but salamanders are fast creatures. Salamanders are small lizards that stick out their tongues to catch insects, but in this story Andreas will discover something else that is very special about salamanders.
Having spent some of her childhood living in the Greek village of Visinia, Kalliope and her brother, Andreas, saw a lot of different animals: donkeys, snakes, goats, salamanders, and even scorpions. They spent a lot of time playing outside with their friends going on picnics, and sitting in cherry trees eating the cherries right off the branch. Kalliope now teaches high school English and enjoys going on adventures with her dog Beau.
