Society of Crows
by Robert W. Butler

The crows’ intelligence, sagacity, and penchant to interact with humans has captivated human imaginations for decades. Yet only a few people have had the opportunity or motivation to devote much of their life to trying to understand them. A lifelong sojourn for Robert Butler all began with a pet crow he fostered as a teenager. From that auspicious moment, Butler watched and listened to crows in remote coastal locations of British Columbia and Alaska, and the suburbs near Vancouver to reveal a story like no other. With humour and scientific insight the Society of Crows will charm and surprise you. Illustrated by original artwork by the author, the book is partly a biographical adventure to uncover new discoveries of the coastal dwelling crow in British Columbia.

“Robert Butler’s fascinating and unorthodox autobiography is revealed through the lens of his lifelong quest to understand crows. An important story that reveals as much about the workings of a leading scientific mind as the mysterious crow. “ —Dr. R.W. Elner, Emeritus Scientist “In Society of Crows, Robert Butler takes us along on his life-long quest to understand the fascinating social world of Pacific Northwest crows. We gain insights into one of the bird world’s most mentally adept members, and we are treated to a delightful crow’s-eye view of an inspired field biologist as he investigates the lives of crows on a remote, windswept island in the Salish Sea and in the urban wilds near Vancouver, B.C. After finishing the book, I couldn’t wait to get out to observe the lives of our local crows as Robert would see them. —Geoff Hammerson, author of A Naturalist’s Yeark in the Pacific Northwest.
