Cupcakes, Unicorns, and Rabbit Holes
An Educational Assistant's stories from the front lines
by Ms. B

Balancing work life and home life can be challenging, especially for women working in education. Educator and mother, wife and mentor—the roles can blur, with women losing their sense of self as they put the needs of others before their own. As the education system continues to evolve, and not necessarily for the better, author Ms. B speaks out about the perils of working in the classroom. Cupcakes, Unicorns, and Rabbit Holes: An Educational Assistant’s Stories from the Front Lines, includes notable anecdotes from Ms. B’s twenty-five-year career. With clarity and insight, she reveals what it’s like to work in a classroom and what it’s like helping others, all while trying to regain her identity as an individual. The ups and downs, the successes and failures, they’re all here. She learns how to fight for peace, for happiness, and to stand up for what is right, even when it feels like she’s standing alone. Unapologetic and insightful, Cupcakes, Unicorns, and Rabbit Holes doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff. It pulls back the curtain to expose the inner workings of the classroom. Whether readers already work in education or considering a career in it, this memoir is a must read.

For over twenty-five years, Ms. B has worked as an educational assistant. Inspired by how broken the educational system is in Canada, she wrote Cupcakes, Unicorns, and Rabbit Holes: An Educational Assistant’s Stories from the Front Lines. She hopes to shine a spotlight on the realities of what happens in the classroom. This is her first book. Ms. B lives in Norfolk County, Ontario, with her husband, two children, and a plethora of animals.
