In Memoria, Hand Stitched
by
Bryony Dunsmore Manders
In Memoria, Hand Stitched is an art book, specifically a fibre art memorial book, and is a reproduction of the artist's handmade, hand stitched fabric book of some of Emily Dickinson's poetry about grief, pain, suffering, faith, and hope. It will appeal to a wide variety of viewers and readers: fibre art artists and others involved in or appreciative of textile art, fans of Emily Dickinson's poetry, and all those who are looking for an accompaniment in the journey of bereavement. It consists of 64 colour images of hand stitched pages.
In Memoria, Hand Stitched is a stunning work of art, infused with immense heart and soul. The choices of fabrics and colours and the way they are stitched together for each set of unique pages form a visual and meaningful narrative. The poetry, skillfully stitched, sits gracefully on every page, drawing the viewer and reader into a contemplative space. This is more than a book, it's a hand-crafted treasure— and an inspiring and moving experience. Karen Selk Author of In Search of Wild Silk
Bryony Dunsmore Manders has loved working with anything textile since she was a child, starting at an early age with knitting, embroidery, and crochet. She attended the Alberta College of Art and École des Beaux Arts de Montreal for four years, majoring in painting, and while at art school she discovered fibre as an art medium. Bryony spent many years weaving tapestries, spinning and dyeing the yarn used in them. Later she began quilting as a foundation for the fibre art she makes now. Bryony has always loved hand stitching, and often combines it with raw-edge appliqué in her art practice. Bryony lives on Vancouver Island, Canada, and is a member of an international fibre art group, the Surface Design Association (SDA), and of the Vancouver Island Surface Design Association (VISDA). She participates in VISDA’s annual exhibitions, always called 'Current Threads’.
