The Far End
by Johnny Gnall

Growing up on her family's wildlife ranch in rural Northern California, sixteen-year-old Persephone Foss felt a strong connection to animals from a very early age. Lately, however, that connection has been showing itself in strange, even scary, ways; most days she would rather just ignore it. But when her botanist mother brings her along on a research trip to the uncharted Amazon rainforest, Seph astonishes herself with what she is capable of- until a horrific accident leaves her mother clinging to life. Forced to confront her gift with animals head on, the spark inside Seph grows in power and complexity, and strange thoughts and visions begin to find their way into her mind. When those visions point her back toward the Amazon, and an ancient, secret society hidden therein, Seph discovers she may be the only one who can save her mother's life.

"In the mystery-laden coming-of-age novel The Far End, a powerful line of magical women is centered. A teenager discovers the truth of her magical affinities in Johnny Gnall’s musing speculative novel The Far End. The prose is evocative, with strong sensory details. Figurative language intertwines with snappy dialogue and everyday slang in lines that are both accessible and stunning: Fog “thread[s] its way through the trees,” and “dusty earth … gradually transform[s] into soft clay.” The stunning beauty of the Amazon is honored, as are the women’s complicated feelings toward it. In the evocative speculative novel The Far End, two women of different generations discover the depths of their powers through ancient magic in the Amazon." ─Clarion Reviews

Johnny Gnall has been writing, in some form or another, since the 2nd grade, but The Far End is his first novel. He grew up on the east coast and earned his bachelor's degree in English from Colgate University, but his passion for food and cooking led him to culinary school in San Francisco. While attending, he moonlighted as a food writer, and has now worked as a professional chef for the past fifteen years. Johnny lives with his wife and two children in Sonoma Valley's wine country
