Tales from Neptu
by John M. Jefferson

John Jefferson’s fans will be thrilled with this captivating anthology of five short stories and a novella, set in the expansive universe of the Devistor series. Spanning over a millennium after the alien attack known as the Disaster—a cataclysm that nearly destroyed human civilization on the planet Neptu, which is connected to Earth via a hyperspatial portal—this collection fills the narrative gaps between the first four novels with gripping tales of survival, resilience, and discovery. • A teenage girl thrust into leadership when her parents vanish under mysterious circumstances stumbles into a way to revolutionize the economy of her small atoll. • A repairman whose homeland is destroyed by the Disaster while he’s overseas servicing a client’s equipment spends his days monitoring shortwave radio frequencies from around the world, hoping to hear a sign of life but unable to respond even if he does. • A prominent son of a leading family is guided by a sentient computer known as Jessica to become an ordinary seaman and embark on a perilous voyage to save a distant land. • An enigmatic cat appears on the island of Kragnor, playing a key role in the lives of those who are shipwrecked there as they work to create a new civilization • A family fleeing oppression discovers a secret that unifies the fractured island of Baneirus. • A man who awakens three thousand years after his birth grapples with his past as a sentient computer and the memories from that time that refuse to surface. This collection showcases Jefferson’s masterful storytelling, rich world-building, and his ability to explore humanity’s enduring spirit in the face of unimaginable challenges. Whether you’re a long-time Devistor fan or a newcomer to this universe, these stories will capture your imagination and inspire you to go deeper into this world.

John M. Jefferson began college as an English major, a background that led to the creation of some of the languages of Neptu. He developed an interest in history in college as well, which fuels much of his characters’ quest to learn about their past. A career as a computer programmer and a passion for science fiction led to the creation of the good and evil forces and the complex and imaginative technologies underlying these stories. John is a resident of Madras, Oregon, where he lives with three cats – Biggs, Ring, and Peekaboo. In his spare time, he enjoys FM radio DX’ing, which is the hobby of searching for and identifying distant FM radio stations.
