Externalities
by D. McCall Johnston

Tuscany, 1950. A chance encounter between two young people on the street marks the beginning of a whirlwind romance. Yolanda and Clemente Gallorini are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime as they begin to build a life together. No one ever suspects it will end in suspense, intrigue, and tragedy. Join multiple generations of Gallorinis in this family saga, beginning with the story of a young couple’s move from Tuscany to Toronto in 1950. Through the second generation—Marie, Ana, and Michael—the saga continues all across Canada, from Yellowknife to Vancouver, from Collingwood to Penticton. No one can predict the twists and turns of this family’s story as they navigate relationships, disappointment, and jealousy. Through the lows of discrimination and rejection and the highs of success and love, the story of the Gallorini family depicts the trials and tribulations of the immigrant experience. Family dynamics are constantly shifting, and ambition threatens to cloud judgement as Marie, Ana, and Ana’s husband, David, a retired member of the RCMP, undertake a legal battle over an inheritance and the investigation of tragic family mystery. A multi-generational saga, Externalities showcases a full cast of characters to portray the experience of one family’s immigration and life in Canada.

Originally from Owen Sound, D. McCall Johnston earned a bachelor of commerce in Montreal and then started working as a chartered accounting student when he came across an opportunity with the Northwest Territories government in Yellowknife. Moving there in 1969, he started a career that lasted twenty years and concluded in a position as an assistant deputy minister. During this time, he and his family lived in several communities, travelled extensively, and met and hosted many interesting individuals. He was also a reserve officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. In his last career, he returned to Owen Sound, and with his certified financial planner (CFP) designation, he established a financial planning practice, which he ran until retirement. This book is the result of the people he met, things he experienced and witnessed during his working life, as well as his active imagination. Johnston’s previous experience in writing was a book that he and his wife, Eldy, wrote chronicling her parents’ experiences in a prisoner of war camp and deportation before arriving and working to make a new successful life in Canada. Johnston, his wife, their three sons, and their families have travelled extensively throughout North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, including several visits to Hungary, his wife’s motherland, and a recent trip to Tuscany, Italy.
