Escape from Transylvania
Journey to New Life
by
Zoltan Mihaly
It is 1984 in Communist Romania and Zoltan Mihaly is young, courageous, and frustrated with the limitations of life under communism and the Ceausescu regime. A member of an ethnic Hungarian minority within the historical region of Transylvania, Mihaly dreams of freedom in the West, and when the opportunity presents itself, he jumps on it. Escape From Transylvania is the unique memoir of a harrowing journey that tests relationships and limits, and a young man risking everything to embark upon a new life. It is a story of adventure, friendship, and overcoming. Through breathtaking landscapes and life-threatening circumstances, our narrator maintains a sense of humour and a refreshing light-heartedness. Relaying some of the rich geography and history of this fascinating part of the world, the book tells the story of personal growth and transformation—a testament to the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity.
Zoltan Mihaly is the brave protagonist of Escape From Transylvania. As a young man he made the brave journey across mountains and forests, rivers and barbed wire, on his quest for freedom. A trained machinist, he became an accounting assistant in Canada and, these days, is retired. Mihaly now lives in Edmonton, Alberta, has two children and three grandchildren, and is involved in his local Argentine tango scene, as well as the Hungarian Cultural Society of Edmonton. This is his first book.
