Climate and the Courage of Leadership
Science, Policy and the Need for Heroes
by Royce William Warren

We are rapidly approaching the point of no return on climate change. Climate and the Courage of Leadership addresses this critical moment with clarity and urgency. It explores why current political systems struggle to act and presents four specific, actionable solutions that governments can implement to move us toward a more sustainable future. Modern democracies face a difficult dilemma. To meet public expectations, they must fund essential services, but often do so by relying on industries that drive environmental harm. This book argues that we must confront that contradiction directly. It calls for a shift in how we govern: one that prioritizes long-term environmental stability over short-term political gain. Drawing on the author’s decades of experience in resources, science, sustainability, and policy, this book offers a clear path forward. Whether you're a policymaker, student, or concerned citizen, Climate and the Courage of Leadership invites you to consider both what must change, and how we can begin.

“An exceptional piece of work! The many recommendations offered to solve the problems highlighted in the books first part require not only heroes on all decision-making levels as aptly postulated in the book’s title, but most importantly, the cooperation of the populus.” ─Dr. Goetz Schuerholz, Conservation Ecologist "Climate and the Courage of Leadership is a pragmatic political science tract about aggressively addressing the threats posed by climate change." ─Foreword Clarion Reviews "A solutions-oriented study of the present state of climate disaster. In well-researched chapters that include charts, illustrations, and inset bullet points, Warren informs his readers of the many familiar dangers of accelerated climate change (such as a lack of food security and a decreasing population), touching on everything from carbon dioxide emission rates to the second law of thermodynamics. He draws on a wide range of up-to-date sources in order to assess the complicated but inevitable relationship between climate action and global wealth inequality, particularly when dealing with the prospect of reaching the coveted “net-zero CO2,” where international treaties are complicated by likelihood of some nations deciding to “go it alone.” Despite the fact that he’s writing about a deeply ominous subject, Warren somehow manages to maintain an optimistic tone throughout. He asserts that “sustainable society” and “laissez-faire capitalism” are incompatible in the long term (“ample evidence exists that capitalism is broken in most modern societies”), but his narrative is driven by a hope for the future: “If individual survival and comfort are the only goals we have,” he warns, “then we are shortchanging our children, grandchildren, and ourselves.” A complex, informed study of what’s needed in the fight to protect our planet." ─Kirkus Reviews

Royce William Warren has spent a lifetime working toward solutions to the climate crisis. He spent many years in forestry, mining, geology, agriculture, fisheries, and energy. This was followed by a decade of advanced university study in sustainability and political science. In addition, his career has spanned university teaching, consulting, government work, writing, and environmental advocacy. He now lives on Vancouver Island with his wife, Christine. They have four children and six grandchildren—and he wrote this book with them in mind.
