Possomblossom and Very Brave Ellis
by
Sara Atkins
Ellis loves adventure—especially at Grandma's island, where she picks blueberries and explores the islands of the Archipelago in her kayak. One day, while looking for a baby possum, a beautiful rock seems to jump right into her hand. When it vanishes, Ellis is devastated. Maybe there is more to this sparkly rock than meets the eye! On her birthday, Ellis finds the rock beside her pillow, hatched like an egg, revealing a tiny, magical unicorn. Ellis names it Possomblossom. With a little science and a sprinkle of magic, Possomblossom helps Ellis and her sister bravely discover a world of real and amazing creatures that need their help. Hop on with the sisters as their adventures begin! “Possomblossom and Very Brave Ellis” is the first book in the Possomblossom series. The books encourage children, especially girls, to pursue an interest in science and the environment, all while having some magical escapades. Endangered species need help, and children can make a lasting difference when they’re inspired and having fun.
Sara Atkins began her career as a freshwater biologist in Canada's far north and prairie provinces. She then chose to become a science teacher, counselor, and later, a public educator and advocate for special places. Sara has always been a natural storyteller, creating whimsical and educational puppet shows, and story times for elementary schools and her neighbourhood children. Now that she has four outdoorsy and delightfully curious granddaughters, she is writing and illustrating fun, educational books to encourage their love of science and the environment. Sara finds inspiration for her stories and art, in nature, travel, canoeing and reading. She lives on an island with her Italian water-dog, Pawter.
