Panoramic Explorations of Nweh Rituals and Performance Language
by Marc Tateh

From the shores of the Fraser River in Fort Langley, British Columbia, Central Africa might seem like a faraway region—in culture, in traditions, and in language, to name a few. But after observing people of the Kwantlen First Nation in ceremony, author Marc Tateh was reminded of his time in Africa and the need to preserve the Nweh language. Panoramic Explorations of Nweh Rituals and Performance Language is a literary analysis of the language used to conduct a few Nweh ceremonies. This hybrid of poetry and prose delves into the language’s literary devices, unearthing a language rich in meaning, musicality, and imagery. Nuanced and attentive, Tateh’s analysis is extensive. He uses his fluency and knowledge to document an oral language that’s traditionally not written. This act of preservation is done with care and respect for indigenous values and traditions. The UNESCO’s Atlas of World’s Languages in Danger states that 40 percent of the world’s 6700 languages are in danger of extinction. With approximately 76,000 speakers, Nweh could be one of those languages at risk. In a time when misconceptions about African peoples and languages continue to persist, and the danger of language extinction grows, education and preservation are essential. With this in mind, Panoramic Explorations of Nweh Rituals and Performance Language is timely as it is necessary.

Among other studies, Marc Tateh is a graduate in literary studies. He is fluent in many languages and enjoys dance and music, especially when connected to mind-healing. One of his interests includes highlighting the importance of people’s social connections to community unity. After witnessing a cultural presentation by the Kwantlen First Nation in British Columbia, Canada, Tateh was reminded of experiences in Africa. It inspired him to work toward preserving the Nweh language, tradition, and customs and to write  Panoramic Explorations of Nweh Rituals and Performance Language.  This is his first book. Tateh lives in Vancouver, Canada.
