Living With Cancer
A Few Things Your Friends Want You to Know
by Dr. Gillian Dolansky Presner

After happily achieving many of my personal and professional childhood dreams, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with terminal cancer while pregnant with my 3rd daughter at the age of 36. In this book I write about my lived experience since that time and give advice regarding how to engage with the people in your life with a cancer diagnosis.

“By sharing her insights through this book as a woman, mom, spouse, friend and physician living with cancer, Gillian writes a deeply personal and thoughtful account. Her guidance around the do’s and don’ts is valuable to anyone who has a family member, friend or colleague living with this disease and who wants to be helpful but is not sure what to say or do. Gillian’s strength, compassion, and humour ground her storytelling, making this book relatable, readable and valuable for anyone wanting to learn more about what it is like to live with cancer.” —Alex Johnston, co-founder/CEO 360 Concussion Care, author of Inconceivable: My life-altering journey from infertility to motherhood, and former Senior Advisor to the Ontario government for justice, social, and women's issues “Gillian takes you on an emotional roller coaster of emotions, with the raw and ugly truth of what a cancer diagnosis really means. A definite eye opener that you won’t be able to put down.” —“Stuntman” Stu Schwartz, MOVE100 radio personality and 2-time cancer survivor

Gillian is, first and foremost, a mom to 3 young daughters. She, her husband Neil, and their children live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where she works as a hospital-based Pediatrician. She is heavily engaged in her home Jewish community and is committed to raising her daughters with her lived values of integrity, honesty, and hard work. She enjoys many physical and intellectual pursuits including skiing, swimming, jogging, and trivia/word games. She and her family enjoy relaxing time watching NHL hockey, especially her hometown team the Ottawa Senators. Since being sidelined by a terminal cancer diagnosis, she has had to downgrade many of her pursuits but remains committed to living a vibrant and full life.
