A Hateful Chill
by David H. Mitchell

Twenty-one years ago, Tim McConnell's wife Betsy was brutally murdered. When her killer is let out on bail, Tim, depressed and suicidal, takes justice into his own hands and attacks his wife's assailant. After a questionable defense, Tim is given a lengthy prison sentence, and when released, still haunted by his wife's death, becomes a drifter, living in homelessness. When a murder crops up in an alley near the waterfront section of Gastown in Vancouver's east end in the present day, and Tim's belonging are found at the scene, the tragic story of Tim McConnell past falls into the hands of Detective Chad Jackson. The investigation, aided by his younger partner, Tony Ryerson, is quickly complicated when two additional murders take place in the Appellate Court parking garage two days later and it is discovered that both victims have ties to Tim McConnell. Filled with twist and turns, this fast-paced novella gives lovers of True Crime and murder mysteries an ending like no other.

David Mitchell was born in Vanderhoof, B.C. a small farming and logging community in Northwestern Canada. A prominent athlete and spirited kid who loved the wilderness he grew up in, David went on to play professional hockey before marrying in his mid-twenties. Following an assault on another man in 1991, he fought to expose the corrupt legal proceeding and vicious character assassination imposed on him by the justice system during his imprisonment. The fictional novella, 'A Hateful Chill, was inspired by those events. David also authored the teen fantasy, 'Harmonicas, a tale of two brothers and a friend, who during a weekend campout, are trapped in magical pit globes and whisked across the universe to save a princess and her kingdom in a far-off galaxy. Today, living in Victoria, B.C. David resides close to his three children and two grandchildren. He continues to enjoy his time outdoors, travelling and exploring the natural beauty of Vancouver Island and the abundance of sea life in the Pacific Ocean and Salish Sea around him.
