flood
by
Nicole Kooyman
In November 2021, disaster struck the Sumas Prairie in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia. A massive, heavy rainfall made land causing floods and mudslides – destroying homes, livelihoods and lives. Flood is a firsthand account of one woman’s experience on her family’s chicken farm, before, during and after the flood. The events unfold moment-to-moment through journal entries that detail the intense physical and mental impact of the disaster as the author works to save her farm. Flood is a true story of both crisis and resilience. It teaches us that when challenges happen, they can be overcome with strength from within.
Nicole Kooyman has always enjoyed writing. She kept a journal during the surreal flood of 2021 as she realized she was living through a “once in a lifetime” experience. Writing this book has allowed her to share her experience, follow her passion and share some wisdom: When it feels like it can’t get any worse, and then it does, keep going and trust that you can make it through. Nicole lives on a farm in Abbotsford, British Columbia, with her husband, three children, three dogs, one cat – and a lot of chickens.
