Hunter
by Nazar Onishchuk

Born the runt in a litter of hardy sled dogs, and abandoned in a nearby mining town, young Hunter had no way of knowing if he would survive his first cold night all alone, let alone the many hazardous paths down which his life’s journey would take him. Luckily for him, though removed abruptly from the warmth and security of his mother’s love, he would not be left out in the cold for long. When a young boy named Edwin notices the small, shivering pup and takes him home, a new love quickly blossoms, and together, they spend years together in joyful, peaceful enjoyment of their simple lives, secure in the knowledge that nothing would ever change. Unfortunately, war is almost as inevitable as change, and when Edwin, now a strapping young man, is called on to fight, he must leave his best friend behind with his parents on their small farm. As hard a goodbye as that was, it isn’t until the battlelines encroach on their home that Hunter is once again thrust into the cold and darkness of the unknown, finding himself at the mercy of the wild. Fleeing for his life from hungry attackers, he finds himself deep in the woods, fully lost, with no way to find his way home and no idea how to survive. Luckily, nature is a strict teacher, its brutal lessons passed or failed in tests of determination and blood. But even though survival might be the wild’s ultimate goal, the only thing that matters to Hunter, the only thing that keeps him going through everything he is forced to confront, is the thought of finding his way back home one day, back to Edwin and the love and warmth of his truest friend.

Author and animal enthusiast Nazar Onishchuk has always loved telling stories, making the worlds he envisions come to full and colourful life through the lines of simple blank ink he lays out on a page. This story was inspired by both his deceased dog from life but not from the heart, Polly, and his personal experiences.
