The FEAR Machine
Culture Misled: Choose Fear or Courage?
by Christine Farrell

The Fear Machine graphic story spins a timely, lyrical tale essential for youth and all of us in this digital age ,that asks,"How did I come to believe those lies?, How could I be so uncompassionate?" The Supremacy Sames of Cyber Cosmos grapple with conflicting change when Ditto Head leader seizing opportunity, quickly harnesses the power of social media to target and blame Those Differents. Using the Fear Machine the leader spews alternative facts and misinformation spreading an ever growing virus of fear and hate of them. Will the Supremacy Sames be able to critically learn how they have been manipulated to believe the Fear Machine lies and choose courage instead of fear thereby raising their consciousness?" This dilemma in choosing fear or courage-driven media surrounds our youth. The Fear Machine is a critical thinking resource designed for educators and parents to spark crucial discussions to combat mis and dis information aimed at Those Differents now and throughout history.

She enjoys living by the ocean in Victoria, British Columbia with her husband, daughters and black cat, Angel. She was inspired to write this cautionary tale while completing her teacher librarian diploma and being alarmed by the growing use of media to spread mis and dis information targeting blame of others. She saw consistently how so quickly, especially in our digital world, fear and hate can spread and has throughout our humanities history. With her Bachelor of Education degree, she has taught children and youth for many years within the public and Montessori environments and strives to keep learning and asking the deep questions. She believes that with teaching critical thinking skills and digital literacy education, we can spot and stop fake news and lies and most importantly open our minds and hearts towards courage and compassion for others whom we have formed hateful bias and stereotypes. Instead, she hopes for a world where we ask Those Differents, " How's life for you?" and Face our humanity on common ground together.
