Sophie is a smart, bubbly young girl who has an eye for style and a love for science. She isn’t afraid of mixing colours or patterns with an elaborate cut, as long as they match her butterfly shoes! And she isn’t afraid of mixing chemicals and using science to create amazing accessories for her friends and family. Sophie enters the annual science fair to try and win a lab full of new equipment. She’s ready to make science that’s smart and fashionable! But when Sophie strides onstage, people tease her flashy clothes. What kind of scientist looks like that? It’s up to Sophie to prove that a scientist isn’t defined by the clothes they wear, or how they look. A scientist is defined by the strength of their experiments. Will Sophie’s science win the day, no matter what she wears?

Lauren Iacobelli has a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science, and a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She studied chemotherapeutic drug targets for metastatic cancers, and is now studying to become a physician. She’s also incredibly stylish, and her experiences in the scientific community and finding the bravery to be herself inspired her to write Sophie’s story. “Don't let someone else’s voice dull your sparkle.” That’s the philosophy Iacobelli lives by, and it’s the message she hopes to impart to other kids—kids like her own niece—who read Sophie’s story. Iacobelli is from Leamington, Ontario, and currently lives in Windsor, Ontario.
