Is This All There Is?
5 changes to rejuvenate your company
by Kerry Tucker , Teresa Siles and Blake Tucker Nelson

You’re a leader in the company you work for and it’s doing relatively well—you’ve earned a nice house, a new car, maybe even a boat—but is this all there is? Is financial gain the only measure of success? With the accumulated knowledge of over a lifetime of leadership in public relations, in Is This All There Is?, Strategic Advisor Kerry Tucker outlines the five ingredients of success and describes how to put those learnings into action. For more than four decades, Kerry and those at Nuffer, Smith, Tucker, Inc., a San Diego-based public relations firm, have been helping CEOs of companies and not-for-profit groups design and implement tried-and-true systems to anticipate, manage, and shape change. Is This All There Is? will empower you with the tools to become a better leader, manager, or CEO and learn to thrive personally and professionally. There are no trendy new ideas in this book, only those that stand the test of time. In the hours it takes to fly from Los Angeles to Washington National, leaders from any walk of life can take a fresh, uninterrupted look at what it takes to become truly successful.

"I’ve experienced first-hand Kerry’s incredible focus, listening skills and a unique ability to bring together so many seemingly disparate points of view into strategic planning. It’s his focus, his big heart and a passion for making a difference that resulted in a partnership with the State Board of Food and Agriculture and the California Association of Food Banks to make the Farm to Family Program such a huge success. I remember that ah-ha moment when Teresa turned the phrase: excess (in the fields) to access (for those who need food)! What a gift you are giving with this book” —Karen Ross, California Secretary of Food and Agriculture. “An efficient read on how organizations can harness the power of purpose, this book offers examples from real clients and helpful exercises with questions that will generate reflection and catalyze action. Tucker, Siles, and Nelson gave me a lot to think about, both as an organizational leader and as a public-relations educator raising up the next generation of communications leaders.” — Bey-Ling Sha, PhD, APR, Dean, College of Communications, California State University, Fullerton, and co-author of Cutlip & Center’s Effective Public Relations, 11th Edition “Is This All There Is? is a brilliant new book on public relations. Drawing upon decades of experience at the highest level in the public relations profession, Kerry Tucker has laid a foundation for the field by outlining the core principles for the ethical and effective practice of public relations. Tucker’s masterful book is a must-read for all students, scholars, and practitioners of public relations in the twenty-first century.” —Jonathan Pavlik, PhD, Professor of Journalism and Media Studies, Rutgers University “As the ‘Fish attitude’ circles the globe in a crusade to improve employee morale and boost productivity, a new entrée, Is This All There Is? offers a lifetime of learnings that have stood the test of time. If you’re looking for a refresh for your company, your industry trade association, or not-for-profit community group, it’s well worth the read.” —Harry Paul, co-author of FISH! A Proven Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results and Who Kidnapped Excellence? “For 50 years, Kerry Tucker and his colleagues have taken on perhaps the biggest ‘dare’ in the world of strategic public relations: They’ve shied away from happy talk and have spoken truth to the power . . . of their own clients. They have long counseled a realistic, if sometimes painful, assessment of both ‘external realities’ and internal capabilities. They have guided clients in wrestling with some of the most complex and challenging issues that confront institutional believability, organization, and success. Their work has led them to understand that authenticity, ethics, and clarity are keys that open many doors, and that developing scenarios to cope with societal and economic change is a task that never ends. In a book that summarizes the lessons learned in figuring out, ‘Is this all there is?’ they have made their experience available to leaders looking for a sextant and compass to guide them.” —Lawrence Kaagan, President, Kaagan Research, LLC, and founding member of the Food Foresight trend-anticipation program, co-sponsored by Nuffer, Smith, Tucker and the University of California, Davis “‘We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.’ TS Eliot understood the rewards that come from exploration and so does Kerry Tucker. What makes Kerry’s take on the topic so compelling is that he walked the talk for 50 years. He has now generously taken the time to share what he learned along the way. Definitely a must read.” —Willard Bishop, chief architect, Brick Meets Click, and another founding member of Food Foresight
