Whom You Will Serve
by Dick Derksen

The Derksen family finds itself as refugees in the town of Altona, just outside Hamburg, North Germany, after the Catholic army has announced its intention to level the village of Wuestenfelde, where the Mennonites have received refuge for nearly one hundred years. The Thirty-Years War is raging all around them, with its religious undertones leaving room for power-hungry nobles to extend their lands and wealth. Jacob Derksen’s life becomes more and more complicated, as he seeks to steer the Mennonite fortunes and the ever-changing aspects of his family.

Dick Derksen came out of a Russian Mennonite background. After serving as a teacher and administrator in two schools for missionary children in Europe, he retired to Calgary, Alberta, in 2007. He began researching the history of his Mennonite forebears and writing this series of novels, along with many other services to church and charities. Jeraldine Wilkinson became Mrs. Derksen on August 31, 1968. Jerry was trained as an operating room nurse, but retrained to become a bookkeeper while working in Europe. Her hobby of water colour painting has been a real source of pleasure and enrichment to her. She drew the illustrations and painted the cover picture for this novel.
