On Consensus
A Framework for Adaptive Action
by Jean Pierre Chabot

On Consensus: A Framework for Adaptive Action is a tool in the toolbox of anyone looking to improve decision-making processes in general and to build consensus in particular. The book provides not only a step-by-step approach to building consensus but it also provides a framework for thinking about how to think about consensus. All institutions are built and sustained through some sort of consensus. The degree to which the consensus that underwrites institutions is conscious determines the future viability of collective choices and actions. Democracy is in need of better tools and thinking on consensus. The book provides a leverage for those involved in high stakes decision-making, especially where there is a convergence of governance, development and stewardship. It explores what is required to arrive at a conscious consensus and to build a path towards more adaptive action. Decision-framing... a profound meeting of minds.

“In this time of division and low-trust we need leaders, tested leaders, who can wade into the churn of social tension and create broad consensus. As a former Green Beret who worked in some of the most trust-depleted countries on earth, I witnessed the innate need for this low-density skill along with the limited number of people either capable or willing to collaborate on this level. It’s not for the faint of heart. Jean Pierre Chabot is one such leader. [...] This is a book that offers real solutions, real hope, and real answers for leaders committed to making a difference." —Scott Mann, Lt. Col. (Retd) “On Consensus offers a clear and comprehensive framework that lays out the roles, considerations and nuances needed to move towards collaboration, engagement and the idea of conscious consensus. Practical tools and solutions are presented and examined through relevant real world case studies. Jean Pierre has created a thoughtful reflection on a complex subject — a must read [...]." —Sheena Li, Advisor in the Canadian Energy Sector

Chabot has followership and leadership skills: he has good notions about when, where, how and why to apply either or both. He has experience in oversight, development, analysis and facilitation; applied to activities in public, private, and non-profit sectors; at local, regional and international levels. He has worked in strategic planning, project management and stakeholder communications. Chabot is an avid reader and values continuous learning. Chabot enjoys canoeing and approaches his professional life in much the same way he would a river. Observation, perception, calculated risk-taking, prudent decision-making, rapid response in action, endurance, and sharing are all things that a river, once paddled, will teach an avid paddler. Canoeing, like a broad-based professional background, provides one with a balanced appreciation for the value and limits of foresight, hindsight, planning and implementation. Chabot wrote On Consensus: A Framework for Adaptive Action in order to help others learn about and ultimately share in building conscious consensus.
