Libby McKechnie shares two dozen whimsical poems and illustrations intended to be read by both children and adults. Many of the poems celebrate colour, art and the natural world evoking a heartwarming enthusiasm for life. She addresses a range of topics without any of them feeling out of place. The watercolour illustrations are meant to be part of the reader’s experience. They are beautiful, fun and compliment the writing nicely. The reader will be left with a feeling of both optimism and celebration.
Come Away with Me is a book about finding beauty in the world around us, our family and those whom we love. Poetry is the expression of the heart. We try to capture in words how we feel about important things in life like love, beauty, faith, and being outside and enjoying and observing nature. I use painting as a visual expression of what I see around me. It is also an excellent venue to let my imagination go to magical worlds where mermaids, fairies, giants and huge butterflies still do exist.
Libby has been a visual arts teacher in both public and private high schools in Ottawa, Ontario for more than thirty years. She also taught art in a Montessori school for ten years. She has painted in oils, acrylics for many years and has been working in watercolour for over five years. Poetry came later in her life after starting a poetry/writing group where like minded friends could gather and read their poetry and discuss ideas. In this book she Is delighted to be able to bring together her love of both poetry and art.
