Traditional haiku contain references to the natural world. Many of Susan’s poems deviate from the standard form. Susan McElwain believes in the idea of an harmonious world where beauty, love, compassion and peace can co-exist. Through her writing she aspires to bring to the reader a moment of appreciation and contemplation for their world. These heartfelt poems, first posted on Instagram @haikuyyz, have attracted an international audience. Susan’s accompanying photos capture the spirit of the haiku’s.
My interest in Haiku was piqued at a young age. A chance encounter with my fathers university text books, in his childhood bedroom, led me to discover the Japanese masters Basho and Issa. The brevity of prose, yet succinct visual pictures haiku provided, sparked an interest. Years later, whilst attending a creative writing class, haiku came to mind. I recorded my haiku's in a journal entitled Modern 17 Syllable Thoughts. Traditional Haiku contain references to the natural world. Many of my haiku's deviate from the standard forms, but the thought process is rooted in the effects of the natural world on me. A Haiku Story is a vibrant collection of intimate reflections on love, spiritual matters and random passing thoughts. Intro. Drawn from references of classical haiku's, art history, travel and life experience, A Haiku Story is a collection of haiku's expressing daily musings, ranging in subject from the spiritual to reactions of current affairs. Although many of my haiku's are influenced by my immediate surroundings, it is the spiritual aspect that interests me. I challenge myself to unite with the intangible and absorb the texture of daily life.
Susan McElwain currently resides in Toronto. Her interest in haiku was piqued at a young age. Susan always challenges herself to unite with the intangible and absorb the texture of daily life. Susan McElwain has resided in Australia, Hawaii and Rome. Her extensive travels were facilitated by her work as a flight attendant, allowing for experiences of diverse cultures and modes of living. These haiku’s reflect her worldly experiences. Susan posted the haiku’s to Instagram @haikuyyz and created an international audience.
