Howie Finds a New Home
by
S.K. Maars
Howie is a young hermit crab who is getting bigger and outgrowing his shell. He just can't quite reach his toes while doing his early morning stretches with his family. Everything feels tight and squishy. What is Howie going to do? His only answer is to go on a shell quest with his younger brother Jay. Together they hike the Rockies, free-fall into some tidal pools, encounter the sausage tentacles of a human child and find out a painful lesson when you rush into things without checking first.Their fun-filled, and sometimes painful adventures allow them the opportunity to receive many gifts for their hard work and perseverance. It never once crosses Howie's mind that he won't find a shell; it's just a matter of when.
S.K. Maars is the author of adult fiction and children's stories, living on the West Coast of B.C. with her husband and two sons. Her love of helping people of all ages is a common thread throughout her varied jobs from working in group homes, being a noon supervisor and crossing guard for local elementary schools, providing daycare from her home and currently working within Court Services in British Columbia. The knowledge gained by these life experiences along with her fond memories of spending times at the beach with family and friends collecting shells and other treasures, help to inspire her writings. Rebecca Bender is the illustrator of Howie Finds a New Home. Her creative interpretation of the characters captures their playful, curious nature while designing a colourful backdrop evoking the West Coast feel which assists the reader in following the journey of these two young hermit crabs. Rebecca started her passion for drawing at an early age winning the Dogwood award for fine art when graduating high school. She pursued her interest in art by attending Emily Carr University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and has currently illustrated dozens of books.
