True Sea Stories on the BC Coast
Captain Len Helsing
A devastating typhoon; a mysterious rescue mission; an encounter between a black bear and a moose; a deadly near-collision on the Homathko River; the hunting of a sea lion by two orcas.
These are just a few of the experiences author Len Helsing relates in his charming, atmospheric, and often gripping collection, True Sea Stories on the BC Coast.
Get to know the incredible BC coastline like never before as you accompany Captain Helsing and his various crews on patrol with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Len Helsing wanted to work on a boat in the Pacific Ocean ever since he was a boy. He arrived on the BC coast in 1954 and quickly set about accomplishing his goal. He has worked on commercial tugboats and federal patrol boats over a long and eventful career at sea; these are some of his stories from that time. Captain Helsing continues to travel British Columbia in his retirement, though mostly on land these days.
