Bartholomew's Wish
by
Nathan Coffey
During his senior year, Nathan is assigned a craft project that must be accompanied by a written story. The craft portion of the project entails painting a fish, but Nathan accidentally bleeds the colors on one of the fish's fins. What starts as a mistake, becomes the foundation of a story. Bartholomew's Wish is about how our perfect God works through an imperfect fish. This story will give parents a fun platform to speak about Jesus into the lives of their children. It will encourage both parents and children to embrace their differences and believe the truth of God's Word that says we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" and "made in the image of God". It will urge parents and their children toward having the faith to stand firm in the Lord and to "use whatever gifts you received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." As unimportant as you may feel at times, God desires to use us and our differences which make us unique. Like Bartholomew, He may even use our differences to save an entire community!
Special thanks to Bryan Coffey (father) and Cindy Coffey (mother) for always believing in your kids, having a positive vision for our futures, and being so unconditionally supportive in all that we do. This book is a great example of that support in how you pursued turning your son's simple high school project into a published text! Another special thanks to Renee Davis. Not only did you bring life to "Bartholomew's Wish" with such beautiful illustrations, but you were also completely committed to pursuing the publishing of this book. You have many other commitments that you are called to daily, and to make this such a priority shows your selfless personality! Finally, a shout-out to Amy Wedge (teacher at Leesville Road High School). It was in your class that I wrote Bartholomew's Wish! You were certainly one of those teachers that made a positive influence on my life and will always be remembered. Thank you for your service to students and always going steps beyond teaching to be an encouragement and a good influence!
Nathan Coffey is a Raleigh, NC native and a 2007 graduate of Leesville Road High School. During Nathan's high school years, he swam and attended Young Life. He went on to continue swimming his freshman year at East Carolina University, but traded that in after his first season to begin doing Young Life leadership, instead. During his remaining three years in Greenville, and through his platform in Young Life, Nathan took the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many new friends at Ayden-Grifton high school. Nathan says that "He came from a Christian home, but Young Life played such a vital role in me understanding my need for Jesus in my own life, and the eternal importance of making sure others had the same opportunity." Nathan is now married to his wife, Jamie, which he says "Is just another blessing that came from being at East Carolina."
