If you are interested in supporting families impacted by mental health, unhealed trauma and substance use in building attachment and reclaiming relationships through nature based activities, this manual is for you. Project Connect introduces a new way of working with youth at risk, and their families. Grounded in theoretical influences guiding practice, Project Connect combines Attachment Theory, Experiential Learning, Family Wilderness Therapy, and Trauma Informed Practice into a model of program delivery accessible to the social service professional. Wilderness provides opportunity for challenge, reflection, movement, and achievement that is less available in other settings. Youth and mentors participating in Project Connect are part of a unique and innovative program designed to build their capacity to connect with themselves and essential support systems in a more meaningful way cultivating lasting change.
Matt McClelland, Cindy Cropley and Mira Miles had been with Project Connect since its creation in 2014 as the “Project Connect Team”. Committed to innovative practice, the Project Connect Team worked together to create a program reflecting best practices for families within the West Kootenays while combining cutting edge theories to support change. The team brought with them unique experiences and perspectives including combined 40 years of outdoor leadership experience working with high risk youth and their families from diverse backgrounds. Sean Larson supported the Project Connect team in a consultation capacity since the programs beginnings in 2014. Sean’s background in Attachment Therapy brought a unique perspective to the program. His contributions and insights were invaluable to the Project Connect Team, and are echoed in program design. Funding for Project Connect ended in 2017.
