Elgin House, Lake Joseph is the story of a Muskoka pioneer family who were able to create a world class hotel from their corner of Muskoka wilderness. Beginning in 1885, the Love family sought to make a living from the Canadian Shield by farming and saw milling. When the tourist boom hit Muskoka at the turn of the twentieth century the Loves' built a small hotel. Within two decades they had expanded Elgin House to one of the largest and most luxurious Muskoka resorts serving over 400 guests. You will follow successive generations of the Love family as they try to improve on the vision of the founder Lambert Love. The resort lasted until the early 1990's and was replaced by another first class development known as the Lake Joseph Club. This is a must read for anyone interested in Muskoka history, architecture or the entrepreneurs that contributed to the success of early Ontario.
