The Ladybug Ring
by Astrid Zoer

Mieneke Jansen, a young girl coming of age in Nazi occupied Holland, writes her experiences in her notebooks. After Mieneke’s passing, her daughter Ann finds her books and after reading the compelling, moving, and at times heart- wrenching stories, decides to write a book about her mother’s war memories.

Astrid Zoer was born and raised in Diever, a town in the Province of Drenthe, the Netherlands. At the age of 27, she moved to Canada, where she now resides in Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon Territory. I was born four years after the end of World War II. When growing up, I heard many stories about the war, but when young, the war seemed like a long time ago to me. It was after I moved to Canada, and met many Canadian Veterans here, who fought in the Netherlands for the freedom of the Dutch, that I realized how raw and vivid these war memories remain in the minds of the people who went through these horrible times. Only a few of these people are still with us, and I believe their stories should be told. Lest we forget!
