No Magic Bullet
Adventures in Restoring a Child’s Mental Health
by Helen Black

No Magic Bullet is part memoir, part guide and part resource. It follows the journey of the Black family as they find their way to overcome their son’s physical and behavioral difficulties. The book describes the approaches the family utilized, outlining their experience with each. It explains practical actions any family can undertake to improve their children’s mental health. Along the way Helen discovered that our food supply and environment are implicated in the present day epidemic of childhood attentional/behavioral disorders. Included is a very readable scientific overview connecting the mental health of children to plant and animal breeding, evolution and GMOs. This is a book of hope for any family dealing with a childhood behavioral issue including ADHD, Tourette’s syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and bipolar disorder, describing ways their symptoms can be reduced and, in some cases, even eliminated.

Helen tells a very compelling story about the struggles of thier family as they dealt with some form of “mental illness” experienced by their first child,John. After continued frustration with the traditional medical system, she and her husband decided to pursue “complementary” services, using many health professionals who had a differant take on treating disease. In this wonderfully referenced text, Helen talks about food, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and probiotics. She talks about naturopaths, psychologists, pharmacists, physicians, chiropractors,as well as other specialists in their respective fields of expertise. How her family had to assemble a team of advisors that would help guide them to a very successful outcome. over a number of years. Her book is extremely well laid out, reads very well, and is packed with very valuable information, including an extensive bibliography along with websites, videos and other resources. Our environment is changing, our food supply is changing, and we need to be made aware of this, and what we can do about it. Dr. Peter R.
