Shifting Light
A Collection of Two Novellas: Renewal and Residual
by Blaire Hoffos Peterson

Author Blaire Hoffos Peterson takes an innovative approach to storytelling in Shifting Light, in which she focuses on themes of fractured family relations and the effect on youth of grief and socio-economic disadvantage. The book comprises two novellas, the first of which, Renewal, tells of best friends Drake and Tish (Patricia), teenagers who come from very different backgrounds, but each of whom suffers from neglect in a dysfunctional family. When they set out on an adventure to explore an abandoned house on Hallowe’en, the story veers into the paranormal with a shocking discovery that just may show them the way to healing, and ultimately, to closure and a better future. In Residual, the second novella, sisters Danny and Angelica struggle to come to terms with the abuse and neglect they suffered as children at the hands of their alcoholic and drug-addicted mother as she lies dying in hospital. One year later, while in Mexico on vacation, they get a mysterious phone call that will catapult them into a shadowy underworld that offers them a life of wealth and luxury they never could have imagined. Good fortune or bad? They’ll have to decide.
