People, Place & Land
Leading for Learning and Mentorship
by Catherine A. Whalen

People, Place & Land: Leading for Learning and Mentorship brings together the collective expertise of educators to explore leadership, mentorship, and teaching practice across K–12 and postsecondary education. Focusing on the school’s signature pedagogy of People, Place, and Land, the authors connect theory to practice through lived educational experience. Using case narratives, reflective inquiry, and systems-based perspectives, People, Place & Land examines educational leadership, Indigenous language learning, neuroinclusivity, support for pre-service and early-career teachers, rural and remote schooling, and the integration of well-being and equity through compassionate leadership. Designed for educators and educational leaders, it offers practical insights and adaptable approaches that support learning, mentorship, and program design in diverse educational contexts.

The contributors to People, Place & Land: Leading for Learning and Mentorship bring extensive experience as K–12 and postsecondary educators, teacher educators, and educational leaders in British Columbia. Most hold earned doctorates in educational leadership, and all are actively engaged in teaching, mentoring, curriculum development, and program design. Their work is in the pedagogy of People, Place, and Land, shaped through program revision, classroom practice, and a shared commitment to leadership and mentorship in education. People, Place & Land emerges from this collaborative work and is informed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and the Professional Standards for BC Educators, particularly Standard Nine. Together, the authors draw on lived experience and practice to support student and teacher learners and to help prepare future teacher leaders and school administrators.
