Slogging North of 60
Half a century of ski trekking through the Yukon and beyond
by
Peter Heebink and
Karen McColl
Join the author and over 160 companions as they journey through 15,000 km of true north landscapes. This book is an account of more than 1,500 days and nights, over 45 winters, travelling through the backcountry of the Yukon and into N.W.T., B.C., and Alaska. These self-supported ski and snowshoe expeditions weave through First Nation Traditional Territories, across pristine rivers and over mountain passes. Routes span the western reaches of Mount Logan to the eastern edges of the Ragged Range Mountains, and forge a continuous path from the shores of the Beaufort Sea to Juneau, Alaska. These are stories of resilience, ingenuity, camaraderie, and an unyielding spirit of exploration.
"Slogging North of 60 is equal parts expedition chronicle, cultural record, and meditation on endurance. For anyone drawn to the Yukon’s wild heart—or anyone who’s forgotten what real adventure feels like—this is your wake-up call." —Pat Morrow, Canadian photographer and mountain climber
Every winter for decades, Peter and a crew of adventure-seekers set out on skis to explore some of the most rugged and remote corners of the North. Behind them, each pulled sleds laden with weeks of essentials, plus a surprise to bolster group morale. Despite the length and difficulty of these self-propelled trips, there was a lightheartedness to them. The endless hours of slogging by day were remedied by delicious meals and plenty of laughter around the fire by night (usually fueled by an ample serving of overproof rum). Slogging is a record of more than 45 self-supported backcountry trips covering 15,000 kilometres through the Yukon and into the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, and Alaska, often tracing historic First Nations trade and travel routes. Landing somewhere between a guidebook and memoir, each thoughtfully crafted trip report includes a route overview and map as well as geographical information, delightful anecdotes, and a healthy dose of humour. Slogging also includes tips for winter camping, gear selection, hate-the-person-in-front syndrome, and more. Peter’s recollections remind us that adventuring is not just about the physical challenge of moving through an unforgiving landscape (although there is plenty of that), but the joy of sharing that experience with others have each joined him on at least one ski slog.
