Conscience and Community
A Citizen's Reader
by Tom Urbaniak

FINDING BETTER WAYS From designing a playground in your community to “countering the coalition of the cruel” in a troubled world, these short, punchy essays will help you to reflect and act. Here is a practical, readable, hopeful book for caring citizens. Cape Breton’s Tom Urbaniak draws on his academic research, plus his leadership, teaching and community experience. This is his ninth book and third citizen’s reader.

Professor of political science, director of the Tompkins Institute and university parliamentarian at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he has chaired several local and national non profit organizations, including the National Trust for Canada and Faith & the Common Good (national inter-faith network). A leader and organizer in the Polish community in Atlantic Canada, Tom works effectively with diverse communities. He has served as an official Canadian election observer in Ukraine.
