A Kamloops Neighbourhood Remembered
by
Andrew Yarmie
Urban revitalization often comes at the cost of history. A Kamloops Neighbourhood Remembered tells the story of a neighbourhood transformed by development, where twenty heritage homes made way for Kelson Group's City Gardens project. Through archival records, newspaper clippings, photos, obituaries, and original artwork, this book captures the lives once lived in these homes—and the efforts made to remember them. From salvaged materials to commissioned paintings, community members and the Kelson Group worked to preserve the neighbourhood’s legacy. More than a local history, this book is a tribute to the people, places, and memories that shaped Kamloops, and a reminder of what we stand to lose in the name of progress.
Andrew Yarmie is a dedicated historian and advocate for heritage preservation based in Kamloops. With a background in local history and urban culture, he has spent years researching and documenting the evolving landscape of B.C. communities. Yarmie brings a thoughtful perspective to the delicate balance between modernization and conservation, drawing on archival research, oral histories, and visual storytelling to illuminate forgotten stories. Debbie Milner-Lively is a professional artist and a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She was commissioned by Ron and Rae Fawcett to paint the twenty houses in this neighbourhood. Her large-scale paintings capture the essence of these heritage homes. They celebrate memory and place, and preserve both the physical structures and the chapters of the people's lives who lived there.
