Faylinn Speaks Up
by Christine Hastie

It is late spring, when the forest floor is greenest and the brook babbles loudest. In a magical clearing in the forest, Faylinn runs and speaks freely with the brook, trees, plants, and creatures who live there. At school, however, Faylinn finds it hard to speak and answer her teacher’s questions. No matter how hard she tries to find her voice in class, the words get stuck. She knows the answers, so why can’t she speak up and say what’s inside as she does in the forest? Faylinn knows she needs to say what’s on her mind. Faylinn Speaks Up encourages children to use their voice and find the confidence to share their thoughts and feelings without fear. Through Faylinn, children learn that their voice can have power, especially when they have something to tell the world.

Christine Hastie worked for over 30 years as a writer/editor and communications specialist. One of the major topics she wrote about in her work was mental health, where she noticed a trend of people being silent about their mental health needs. Researching the benefits of speaking up for a book for adults, she learned that our communications habits and skills are set mainly in childhood. This led to the idea for Faylinn Speaks Up. Christine’s writing has appeared in various publications. She lives in a home surrounded inside and out by plants and water gardens near Montreal, Quebec, with her partner, François, and their dog, Penny.
