Dr. Danger
Life Story Of A Rural Veterinarian
by
Dr. Art Schatz
Dr. Art Schatz has been deeply involved with animals since he was born. During his childhood in rural Canada, his family had no local veterinarians nearby, so he learned to tend to the farm animals and turned that passion into a career. After veterinary college, Dr. Schatz entered a career primarily with large animals. Life is not a straight path, and Dr. Schatz’s is no exception; after developing an insidious illness, he took a side path from his veterinary career into teaching. It was here that he gained his nickname “Dr. Danger” from one of his students for his ability to deal with potentially dangerous large animals. Dr. Danger is a memoir about our big animal companions on farms and one of the many people who look after them. Between stories of his life are thoughts about the veterinary profession as it has developed in Canada and a broader examination of food systems, both human and animal.
Dr. Art Schatz was a rural veterinarian for eighteen years, then a college instructor for the education and training of veterinary technicians for an additional twenty-three years. He was encouraged to write this memoir, Dr. Danger, by a late friend and colleague, Dr. Dave Perron. Dr. Schatz picked it up again once his daughter and wife encouraged him to keep writing. He hopes to enlighten his readers about rural veterinary practice in between the many amusing stories. He raised cattle for thirty years and is now retired with his wife Eileen in Garrison Manor, Fairview, Alberta, Canada.
