Mindful Landscape Painting
My Watercolour Journeys
by
Hiroshi Shimazaki
Can landscape painting be an avenue for examining current and historic world views, understandings, and perspectives on human nature? Can it be an avenue for philosophical exploration? Hiroshi Shimazaki’s answer is a resounding, “yes,” and he introduced this theme, along with an assessment of necessary materials and numerous illustrated notes on fundamental concepts and techniques in Mindful Landscape Sketching. In Mindful Landscape Painting: My Watercolour Journeys, he elaborates on, expands, and explains his stance utilizing 108 concrete examples chosen from his works for their geographical and thematic diversity. Together they comprise a whirlwind tour of the globe: magical and soul-full scenes; the power of nature; glimpses of history; age-old celebrations; daily and seasonal delights; iconic structures; panoramic vistas, and even imagined landscapes. Mindful Landscape Painting: My Watercolour Journeys is a thought-provoking resource for anyone who practices, or wishes to practice, landscape painting. It is an invitation to students of life, encouraging them to pick up a paintbrush and relish the joy it offers.
Born in Tokyo and educated in political science, economics, and cultural geography in Japan and Canada, Hiroshi Shimazaki, during his nearly sixty years in academia, found watercolour sketching and painting an effective tool for geographical research and for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Shimazaki has exhibited his art in twelve countries, given painting workshops at home and abroad, published several art books, and given presentations at academic conferences worldwide on the interface of research and painting.
