The Tale of the Purple Pupil
by
Wallace Wong
In a world where everything is either pink or blue, one student discovers the power of embracing their own unique colour and learns that being true to yourself is the most vibrant choice of all. Purple feels different from everyone around them. All their classmates embrace either pink or blue, but neither colour fits Purple. All Purple wants is to fit in, but they can’t figure out how to. Everything in their world is either one colour or the other. They try to force themself to fit in with the rigid pink or blue moulds, but they always feel wrong. When a spill of pink and blue paints reveals a whole new colour, Purple cannot deny the connection they feel to the beautiful shade that is neither pink nor blue, but something totally unique. As Purple begins to embrace this new colour, feeling free and strong, they discover that they were not the only one who felt neither pink nor blue, and inspire their classmates to celebrate their differences. The Tale of the Purple Pupil is a heartfelt story about embracing your true self, inspiring children and adults alike to celebrate their uniqueness and find belonging in a world of endless colours.
Dr. Wallace Wong is a psychologist with nearly 30 years of experience supporting LGBTQ+ kids, teens, and families. He’s worked in clinics, schools, and community programs—always with a big heart and a listening ear. After almost two decades helping young people navigate questions about identity, mental health, and growing up (including roles in Child & Youth Mental Health, the Adolescents Sexual Health Program, and the Gender Health Program), he retired from government work in 2021 to focus on his private practice. Dr. Wong is also a passionate storyteller and educator. He’s written chapters in professional books like Families in Transition, (Re)imagining Gender and Love, and Trans Activism in Canada, and has given workshops around the world on LGBTQ+ topics. But his favorite projects? Writing books for kids! He’s the author of three beloved children’s books on identity and acceptance: When Kathy is Keith, It’s So Gay and It’s Okay, and My Positive Uncle. What inspires him most is the resilience, humor, and creativity of the young people he meets. He hopes his stories help every child—and every grown-up—celebrate what makes them unique.
