I Am That I Am
The Ultimate Reality Self-Revealed
by Henry Martens

“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” St. Augustine, The Confessions Deeply personal reflections on twenty-six attributes of God anchor I Am That I Am: The Ultimate Reality Self-Revealed to the important questions that most of us have at some time in our lives: • Is there some reality beyond the physical world? • Who or what is God? • Who am I and what is the purpose of my life? With the belief that the Bible is a self-revelation of God’s will, power, and mind, Henry Martens probes God’s character, commenting on each featured attribute, explaining their significance, and offering a sense of God’s awesome presence and the potential for relationship that his people have with him. As Martens sees it, these revelations deserve an individual and personal response, and his reply, in a short series of five letters, is provided in the second part of the book. Part three contains a short letter, an expression of gratitude to God, a tribute to God’s goodness, and a reminder to both author and reader that we can trust God’s promises to calm our restless spirits. Written out of his passion to care for all creation, including people, Martens has produced a thought-provoking book, encouraging readers to take a closer look at God and to ask themselves how they might relate to and with him. Martens shares his personal experience and belief in God’s existence, power, and love. I Am That I Am offers hope, rooted in the author’s relationship with God, for all those who search for meaning in their lives.

Both Henry Martens and his wife, Elma, have shared a living passion of caring for all of God’s creation, including people with all their needs—physical and spiritual. It is therefore no surprise that, as a labor of love, they spent many years helping to establish a Bible camp, a Christian nature interpretive center, and the Pembina Valley Provincial Park in the Pembina Valley of Southern Manitoba. After dropping out of school as a teenager, Henry returned to school and earned his BA, BEd, and MEd degrees from the University of Manitoba. His first teaching assignment was at a remote First Nations community in Northern Manitoba. When Henry and Elma’s children reached school age, the family returned to Southern Manitoba, where Henry continued his teaching career. Henry has authored two books, Footprints of Hope and The Valley: My Quest for the Ultimate Reality, both written to specifically augment and support the Pembina Valley Interpretive Center. Both Henry and Elma have been very active in their local church. Henry has served as assistant pastor and as pastor. They each emphasize that God has given them a wonderful life; none of it was of their own doing. They have three children and eight grandchildren.
