Token for My Sanity is a collection of poetry and prose that takes the reader on a journey of themes that shift from racism, pain, loss, and social stigmas to an appreciation of relationships, mental wellbeing, hope, and societal growth. Young showcases his desire to illuminate dark truths by bringing his raw life experiences to the forefront of his creative nature. He details the complexities of blackness, childrearing, love, and sense of self by embracing grey areas that cannot be categorized by the dualism of right and wrong. The approach to this body of work centers on presenting the entire truth no matter how traumatic or enjoyable. This collection reinforces the power of transforming heavy emotions into narratives that promote positive change.

Tamaz Young wears many hats as a literary artist, music enthusiast, restaurant team member, amateur weightlifter, and student. He started writing poetry at the age of fifteen, publishing his first book, Unrequited Expressions, during his senior year of high school. Although raised in Memphis, Tennessee, he currently resides in Houston, Texas pursuing an undergraduate degree at Rice University. Through the gift of poetry, he has hosted and volunteered at various open mic events throughout the Houston and Dallas area while also creating the first poetry club at Rice--Be. wRite. Speak. His work has appeared in two student-led publications, R2: The Rice Review and The MUSe, annual literary magazines at Rice University and Memphis University School, respectively. Young aspires to further his career in the fine dining restaurant industry while continuing to write, perform, and publish poetry.
