Why a Vaccine, Dad?
by John Chaput and Leanne Chaput

Timmy’s heard an awful lot about COVID-19 lately. What it is, what we’re allowed to do . . . so many changes! And Timmy has learned a lot throughout the pandemic, but there is one thing he doesn’t quite understand. What is a vaccine? How does it help? And perhaps most seriously of all, does it hurt? It’s a good thing Timmy’s dad can help answer these questions. Join Timmy and his dad in Why a Vaccine, Dad? as they discuss the big questions around COVID-19 and vaccination. Use the interactive section at the back of the book to colour and record details from your own vaccine experience!

Just as Timmy and his dad come together as a family and for their community, the Chaput family did the same to create this story. Designed to help facilitate conversation, Why a Vaccine, Dad? allows parents and guardians to engage with children about the COVID-19 and other vaccinations, providing information to help reduce fear and anxiety around vaccination. John Chaput is an avid outdoors person, husband, and father. He’s raised his children to consider how they could improve the lives of others—a lesson Timmy’s dad shares with Timmy. John was inspired to write this story after having observed the way communities across the country, and globally, struggled with the stress and fear surrounding the pandemic. A writer in more ways than one, John’s latest article, "Lifelong Learning," can be found in Prairie Manufacturer Magazine, Summer 2019 Edition (Volume 4, Issue 1). Leanne Chaput is a high school student, and writing is one of her many passions. Her short story titled “Corona’s Grand Lottery” was featured in The Quiet: A Collection of Short Stories Written by Young Canadians, published by the Polar Expressions in 2020. Leanne was inspired to co-author to this book by her belief that vaccine development and distribution against COVID-19 is what has allowed her to safely return to school and pursue her education. She hopes to educate young readers on the importance of the vaccine through this story. Stefanie Chaput is a university student studying microbiology, through which she is learning about the vaccine types and mechanisms. Her program has included a careful study of the evolution of COVID-19, and Stefanie felt inspired to illustrate this book after having seen the impact of the virus on human health. The Chaput family lives together near Winnipeg, Manitoba, along with their three dogs, three cats, and a handful of chickens.
