The Bearded Queen
by
Jill Shakley
When in 1932 young Richard Goodale travels to London to visit his older brother, Rodney, he finds himself swept up by Rodney's eccentric boss into a plot to recover a stolen stamp. Despite his new-found preoccupation with learning to draw, Richard's initiation into burglary instead finds him retreating across two countries in company with a voluptuous poet (never poetess), just one of the surprising characters he meets.
"Jill Shakley" is really Jill and James Shakley. A lifelong fan of vintage fiction, Jill spent much of her early life in graduate studies in English Literature at the University of Toronto and her later life working at the Hospital for Sick Children. Born in England, her husband James is an artist known primarily for his military miniatures and his water colours. They live in Toronto, Canada, with their three cats.
