Freda's Little Red Huset
by Laurie Solis

Join Freda as she takes you on a fearless journey of history and discovery growing up in Sweden, in the tiny town of Jamjo. She lived with her family in the Little Red Huset with big wooden doors. Life was tough and demanding. Her family had to endure many hardships. When Freda gets older she takes a very long journey and boards a giant ship all alone, for many days, to try to make a better life in the new country called Canada. After many years of listening to Freda's stories her grand daughter dreams of visiting Sweden to try to find the Little Red Huset with the big wooden doors. What adventures would happen along the way? Who would she meet? Would her dream of finding the Little Red Huset come true? This is a heartfelt story of two women's bravery and courage. Freda tries desperately to hold onto her Swedish traditions, all alone, in a new country where she speaks no english. It is also a story of a grand daughter's deep desire to discover her heritage and while doing so developing meaningful family roots. These heartfelt connections and relationships will continue to be passed down through future generations.

Thank you to Anita Hallberg, Per Hallberg, Svea Hallberg, Marianne Norman, Bo Norman and all their children and grandchildren. My mom for sharing her pictures. My husband Manuel for taking the journey with me. Written for my daughters Natalia and Tatiana to pass down through the generations.

Laurie Solis is from Vancouver, B.C. and her grandparents both immigrated from Sweden. Laurie developed a special bond with her grandmother, Freda, and enjoyed listening to many stories about the Old Country. The Little Red Huset was inspired by her recent trip to Sweden where she reconnected with many family members. This was an important story for Laurie to write to honour the thousands of people who emigrated in the early 1900's. They left behind family and traditions and did their best to hold onto them in a new country. Laurie hopes this story encourages others to explore their Heritage and roots. May stories continue to be told that should never be forgotten.
