Nayan's Family Fruit Salad
by Navjit Sandhu

Hi there! My name is Nayan Singh, and this is my pet lion Sher Singh. It’s a beautiful day here in Vancouver, and we are going to have a picnic in the park with my grandparents Dada Ji and Dadi Ji. We have packed up all of our food, except our fruit for our fruit salad. It would be fantastic if you could join us on this adventure to explore our local market. As we collect our fruit, we can learn their names in Punjabi, while singing to a familiar tune. I can’t wait! It’s going to be so much fun!

Having taught as a professional early childhood educator for fifteen years, and as a mother of two young boys, Navjit, better known as Navi, knows how much children love interactive learning. They love to be a part of the story as it comes to life. By involving them and encouraging them to share in the telling of the story helps build their confidence, and that gives them as sense of great accomplishment. Through the Nayan’s Books series Navi hopes to introduce the basics of Punjabi language and culture at a grassroots level. Nayan’s adventures will allow readers to learn simple concepts such as colours, numbers, and the names of animals through vibrant illustrations, songs, repetition, rhythm and rhyme. The ultimate goal with Nayan’s Books is to spread the message of inclusiveness, diversity, and multiculturalism; while creating a vehicle for young children from all cultures to see that they too can be represented in literature.
