Luke Helps Out
by Sheryl Fehr

Luke is very, very bored. “Go outside and play,” his mother tells him. But there’s nothing to do! Outside, strange things start to happen: a man and a lady arrive in town and they are told to sleep in the stable, on a bed of hay! Pretty music fills the air – where is it coming from? A bright star shines above the stable. It’s the brightest star Luke has ever seen. Can Luke lead the shepherds and the wise men to Mary and her special baby?

This was a very sweet retelling of the Christmas story from the point of view of a young boy, Luke, who is in Bethlehem with his parents who have also come for the census. There is not much for a young boy to do and his mom tells him to go out and play, but do not get in trouble. He meets Joseph and Mary. He is fascinated that they are having to sleep in the stable and asks if he can do anything to help them. Joseph asks him to show the way to the stable to the people who will be showing up for the birth of his baby. Luke directs the shepherds and the wise men to the stable. He also brings his mom and she kneels before the baby Jesus. Children will love this story and the idea that even kids can help and be important (such as counting). J. P. Roberts' illustrations are muted quiet, and simple. They go well with this quiet story. This would be a nice addition to a church Sunday school library or for any home. - Writer's Digest - Judge 22nd Annual Writer's Digest Self Publishing Book Awards

“When my children were small, I would try to see the world through their eyes. I would write little stories about their antics with the hope that I wouldn’t forget the innocence of youth.” Sheryl Fehr lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband, Ron. They have three grown children: Alan, Jackie and Rachel. She still enjoys looking at the world from a child’s perspective.
