Express Gambler
A Horse's Story
by J. M. Friesen

Ewe-necked, with hips and ribs showing, Express Gambler was in terrible shape when Marie met him, having been subjected to inhumane “breaking” methods and a complete lack of understanding from the humans who were supposed to care for him. Yet he would go on to become the wise old mentor of an entire herd of rescued horses. Express Gambler: A Horse’s Story is the true story of the author’s gentle attempts to bring traumatized horses back into positive relationship with humans. Express Gambler was the first––many horses followed, each with their own wounds and unique personalities. Their stories show all the ways that we can fail these magnificent animals and highlight the priceless gifts they give us when their trust is won back. Told from a horse’s point of view, the book is illustrated throughout with photographs of the individual horses. A plea for understanding and better treatment, Express Gambler: A Horse’s Story will appeal to all those who love horses, from young adults upwards, especially those who work with them.

"Express Gambler: A Horse’s Story by J. M. Friesen is tale of a special relationship between a woman and a broken, rogue horse. Through kindness, patience and love Marie helps to transform Gambler into a true partner and responsible herd leader. Throughout their many years together they share a strong bond which allows both Marie and Gambler to aid other horses that have suffered neglect and cruelty at the hands of thoughtless, uncaring people. This book is a must read if you hope to understand horses from their point of view. People and horses think very differently and all too often the horse suffers for it. I was fortunate to know Gambler and some of the other horses featured at a good time in their lives when their trust in people had been restored by the author. I am in awe of her connection to these beautiful spiritual creatures and despite decades loving horses this book has inspired me to be even more patient and compassionate. Well worth reading!" —Joanne Pue, Horsewoman

J. M. Friesen has over three decades of experience with horses and has rehabilitated many horses over that time, including Express Gambler. A member of the Horse Council BC, her articles on horses’ wellbeing and rider safety have appeared in various journals. Express Gambler is her first book, with a sequel in the works. She lives in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia with her husband, two guardian dogs, and an ever-changing herd of horses of different sizes and breeds.
