Frontier Journey
by
Ken Funk
Frontier Journey is a moving, personal reflection of the author’s pioneer journey from his childhood farm home in Pennsylvania to a missionary assignment at the end of the pavement among a First Nations community in northwestern Ontario. As a recent high school graduate in the 1970s—in the happy-go-lucky time before technology and a faster pace of life took over—the author shares with readers of this book the unexpected joy to be found in witnessing to a community of children and in giving up personal freedoms to serve others. This heartfelt manuscript shines on a season of growth in faith and relationships, including the relationships he formed among the kids with whom he interacted, as well as his personal faith journey, a faith-based story of personal growth and pioneering missions. The easy-to-read narrative features personal and spiritual reflections, and observations about the author’s work at Northern Light Gospel Missions in Red Lake, Ontario. This work aims to inspire for readers their own emotional, social, and spiritual encouragement, whether considering a similar journey of their own or simply attempting to learn to take risks, to go outside their comfort zone, and to venture into the challenge of meeting human needs.
Ken Funk was raised in a safe, traditional farm family in south-central Pennsylvania. After high school graduation, Ken left home and set out on a journey of personal growth, spiritual development, and compassionate altruism toward a community in rural Ontario. The two years covered in this book set up Ken for a life of cross-cultural ministry, beginning with what he describes as the privilege of living in and among a First Nations community, and supplemented with a master’s degree from Columbia International University. Ken lives with his wife Sondra in the small town of Nipigon, Ontario, just east of Thunder Bay. Hobbies that include fishing and hunting continue to draw Ken into the great wilderness of northwestern Ontario.
